Sonos' comparable-in-sound-but-smart-assistant-less wireless speakers range from $199 - $499, so HomePod hits a sweet-spot there. But maybe that’s a good thing; as the majority of consumers don’t really get what a smart home is, it might be better to start with an awesome-sounding speaker that also happens to control your lights. However, the HomePod’s $349 price makes it much more expensive than every other smart speaker, and its smart-home functionality is much more limited, too. While you can use it to get news, weather and sports scores, for instance, you’re not going to ask it for a recipe, play a game, or order a pizza — all things you can do with Alexa.

The HomePod Mini doesn’t have a companion app aside from the Home app that allows you to manage and customize all of the settings for your smart speaker. Since Nest Audio works with iOS, Android, Nest Aware, Nest Hub, and pretty much any other smart home device, personalizing your Nest Audio smart speaker is a walk in a park. The HomePod Mini is small, meaning it has a smaller tweeter and woofer. However, it’s also equipped with dual passive radiators and a full-range driver for crisper and clearer high frequencies and deeper bass.
Apple HomePod mini is more expensive
Set up Apple HomePod, you need the Apple Home app, which is only available for iOS, but that’s only the tip of the iceberg. You also need iCloud Keychain enabled and two-factor authentication for your Apple ID. It’s a cylinder with rounded edges, covered in fabric that’s either space gray or white.
Fill your room with 360° audio to achieve the most enhanced sound from nearly every angle. The Nest Audio has a more pronounced design because of its heftier size. The Google Nest Audio brings you a brand new pill-like appearance, which is far from unattractive. While not as elegant as the apple-like shape of HomePod Mini, it is simply different. What matters is that you can put it pretty much anywhere, and it fits well with most home decor. HomePod Mini has a subwoofer and a noise-canceling microphone, more microphones, and magnetic shielding.
Siri, Alexa, or Google Assistant?
If it's sound quality you're jonesing for, get some wired speakers and have at it. If, on the other hand, you're in the market for a SMART speaker, then you need to assess the merits of Siri (and any multi-user/multi-room capabilities) against Google Assistant and/or Alexa. In this real-world comparison, HomePod is a fail, and not just because of the absurd price. I think Apple understands this, as the spin from them is the $350 you're spending is for a high-end sound experience; curiously, no hype about how well Siri performs against its competition. All three voice assistant devices can control your home in different ways. As an Apple speaker with Siri, the HomePod offers full voice control of any smart home device compatible with Apple's HomeKit ecosystem.
This is the one a lot of you came to read about, and… it's an interesting one. In short, the Google Home Max delivers more of a wallop, but the HomePod is better tuned and, overall, we think it's the better sounding speaker. It’s an improvement over Google Home and is much faster to respond to voice commands. HomePod Mini has the latest Apple’s innovation, the U1 ultra-wideband chip. This allows this smart speaker to detect any nearby iPhone or Apple device and interact with it using vibrations, sounds, and animations.
If you’re choosing between the two products, those points of differentiation are likely the most important ones to consider. Much of the price difference boils down to what’s in the guts of each product, as you’ll see in the next few comparisons of their other specs. The three Harman Kardon speakers built into the Invoke seemed pretty good — until Apple announced that HomePod would have more than twice that. I also would have liked to have seen some sort of integration with Apple TV, so you could search for and play shows using your voice, and without picking up the remote. My musician parents frequently held rehearsals and practice sessions in our house; rare was the afternoon I'd come home to a silent living room. The HomePod is much smaller, but the Max has a more classic speaker design, if that's what you're into. One thing the Max has that the HomePod doesn't is a physical mute switch on the back. Slide it across and the Google Assistant can no longer hear you. You can mute Siri on the HomePod, but you have to do it in the Home app on your iOS device. The price and release date for the Invoke and Essential Home hub have yet to be announced, so it’s hard to predict its success.
